Our formal dining room: our new playroom?!?

This is a photo of Emily sitting next to her Thomas the Train "Zip Zoom & Logging Adventure" train set (that is about 6 feet wide!). You can also see part of her white table & chairs and her pop up tent.

Here she is again, a few days later. Notice David pushed all of our furniture to the back wall and moved in her art easel as well as her princess castle tent.

This was our formal dining room.

A room we rarely use that basically just holds some furniture.

David & I have felt it is a huge waste of valuable space for about a year now and are considering storing the dining room furniture (we have an eat-in kitchen but mostly eat around the coffee table in our living room) and turning it into the kids' play room. A rug made of those foam squares, an activity/train table, and a few floor cushions would make this room a great space for play dates and homework and would also be a great, safe space for Nolan as he becomes mobile. We already have a baby gate up on the doorway that leads to the kitchen so, adding a gate to the doorway that leads to the living room/front door would be all we would have to add. Having this space would also prevent us from baby proofing the living room!

Stay tuned to see what happens...

  1. I think this is a great idea - you need to make your space livable and enjoyable. I caution you, if you have cats, about the foam squares; our cats destroyed ours and we opted to replace it with a small area rug!! Can't wait to hear more about it. amber :)

  2. I was just telling my sister-in-law that I wish we had a formal dining room or living room on same floor as family room so I set up a play room on the main level by the kitchen (and family room). It is so nice and conveniant. Great way to use your home more efficiently if you don't use the dining room more than acouple times a year!

  3. I think it's a great idea! Our upstairs loft area is supposed to have a couch and be a hang out area. I think we will add the couch eventually but leave it as the kids' play area. SO much better than having her take over the rest of the house...as much.

  4. Oooh, Amber, thank you for commenting about the cat! We have a cat and only when I brought it up to David did we both rethink our idea. She would tear those foam squares up for sure! Maybe a rug would be better...

Thanks, JC and Jess, we are liking the idea more and more with each day that passes when we see Emily enjoying it. :)

  5. I say go for it! Izzy used our formal living/dining area for the longest time.
