Emily's first pair of glasses! #firstgrade #motherhood
Emily's appointment was in December and it was discovered that she is nearsighted. No astigmatism! She can only read small print 12-18 inches from her face, as she would read a book with us at night or at her desk at school and she can read large print like billboards and roadsigns. Nearsightedness can be hard to catch and because she was performing just fine with us in normal life, we never suspected she was having trouble.
Because of our generous vision insurance, Emily was able to choose 2 pairs of glasses. I decided to let go of my controlling desire to pick a very modest, purple pair decorated in flowers and allowed Emily to pick any two pair she wanted.
A Juice Couture pair with peace signs along the sides was her first choice.
And a Candies pair, black with pink butterfly cutouts along the sides was her second choice.
Just the fact that she was ecstatic to wear glasses kept me quiet. And somewhat content with her choices. Children have enough to worry about at school so we were relieved and grateful at drop off this morning when all her classmates ran up to her with a "cool" and a "I wish I had a pair like those".
She doesn't have to wear them at recess, lunch, nor PE and if she gets a headache and is doing work at her desk, she can take them off.
While she loves that she can see and is amazed at how glasses work, she's most intrigued with the pale pink case covered in little white hearts they came in and using the little green cloth to clean them. :)
